In general this game is limited to the speed of the CPU and not the speed of the GPU. The render thread consists of both GPU and CPU work. The majority of CPU work is either related to creating batches, Lua code or the Lua garbage collector. The batches are influenced by rendering distance. The Lua code is influenced by the number of UI mods. The Lua garbage collector can create spikes.

Can you share your in-game settings? And list your UI mods? If there are many, try without. And perhaps reduce the rendering distance. The game should run fine with your specs.

I have a old ass ryzen 5 3600x but a similar GPU to you and I can tell you that there is a noticeable difference in in-game FPS between windowed (no matter if maximized) and full screen. It might be because of my dual monitor setup (one being a older 60hz monitor and the other a newer 120hz one) but I have just accepted it as I found no easy fix. Maybe someone with more experience can pitch in.

There is also the somewhat new fps limit settings in the in-game settings, worth turning that up, defaults to 60 fps which can show off as laggy behavior.
Other than that usually some bad mod or driver/overlay issue then next in turn.

@Giebmasse You mean this "Minimum frametime" setting, right?

I played around with it, and noticed/saw/felt no difference with 240 FPS on a 240 HZ monitor. Perhaps when FPS are much lower it will be noticeable, but was too lazy to test that.

Yup that, it was quite choppy for me on the default 16 / 60 fps setting, seemingly same for OP.

I've adjusted the default value. It is now 8 instead of 16. See also: https://github.com/FAForever/fa/pull/6932. Thank you @ugotcodyed for bringing it up!

@ugotcodyed Did changing the frametime fix the +/-40 fps spikes or did it only fix the low GPU utilization?
