You guys ever thought if moving to a new engine?

Square Enix is copyright holder Supreme commander. Over the many years of FAF's existence, has anyone attempted to reach an agreement? For example, ask for money for a remaster? FAF's audience is 1 million players, I think that's enough for you to be taken seriously. Square Enix funds Indie Projects. Maybe write to Square Enix Collective? Square Enix is a big company and it has many "towers", both small and large.
-
Yes, we have attempted to reach out to Square Enix. They have shown no interest in wanting to talk to us, much less give us money.

BAR devs say that, even though mods are not a priority right now, the game will be very moddable (especially if we help). And we already can edit unit stats to our liking. So why not "import" SupCom into BAR? (But without importing 3D models.) Mechanics there are a bit different, but there are things I would not change (because they are cool). Things like:
- 100% friendly fire [while units don't intentionally shoot friendly units in the back, only by accident]
- Deformable terrain
- Hills obstruct radar coverage
- Units don't generally shoot hills
I play both games. I like SupCom's style, but BAR's implementation is better. In BAR, I rarely encounter lags or disconnects (and you can easily reconnect); anything can be fixed (hello, lost source code); moderation reacts within days compared to months here; can properly mute people (including markers); can hide your country; the game is free (new players) and open source.
Didn't someone import Total Annihilation into FAF some time ago? Why not import SupCom into BAR?

Because doing that is going to end in BAR getting a cease and desist from Square Enix for using their platform to give away their IP for free.
-
@FtXCommando What IP? We won't even rename units, and keep BAR's 3D models.
-
You obviously can’t do that when BAR is missing a whole tech level, new models will need to exist.
Don’t see the point in porting over a game that plays differently, is called differently, and looks differently. Just create a new game at that point.

Would adding the same Steam integration game check requirement solve this? I suppose the question is really to Square Enix who aren't predictable.
-
@Defiant Why would anyone want this? It's about the feeling of the game, not 3D models and unit names. We can get free from copyright.

Why doesn't Square Enix touch faf now?
The rights to the game and therefore the income from sales belong to Nordic Games. Square enix doest make any money from the game.
Square enix doest receive money from SCFA sales. -

Reasonable.
Games similar to FAF are out there now. A more direct FAF clone might still risk Square Enix, so we could give them license accountability.

What would be the goal of a new engine standalone FAF game?
Better performance?
Better connections?
Infinite expanses, infinite possibilities? The closest thing to that is Sanctuary: Shattered Sun. But they don't seem to be getting any investors.
I've looked at the gameplay and it's just not what I like about +2000 MP games in FAF.Or Beyond All Reason.
Played it for 1 hour and it's absolutely not mine. And it's not like it was over after Supreme Commander Forged Alliance.
There was Supreme Commander 2, which I didn't like at all.
Or later Planetary Annihilation.
Neither of them were really commercially successful. And if the creators of Supreme Commander Forged Alliance haven't managed to come up with a decent (better) successor over the years, how are a bunch of hobby developers supposed to do it in their spare time? And for what, if you already have perfection, except for certain connection problems.

re sanctuary-i don't have high expectations of devs who don't understand that you live inside a dyson sphere, not on it
-
@ZOB Just watched a Sanctuary game cast. Feels like Sup Com. Haven't actually played the game, but I don't get your comment. Explain please?
-
Just a reminder that this game is dying even harder now (players are IP-targeted with DDoS), demands that you show your country for more intense shitting on each other, is pier-to-pier, its source code is lost, while BAR has a better infrastructure but is still being not as great as SupCom.
Make a BAR-SupCom baby by joining BAR development, adding mod support into the game and moving SupCom there! #makeSupComGreatAgain

Thank you for the reminder. It is not the solution. I'm not sure if the BAR team is even interested in such a collaboration. I'm sure they have enough problems and interests of their own to manage .
I personally have no interest of working tens of thousands of hours towards a project that all existing contributors of FAForever lack the collective experience and expertise to pull off. And none of those hours would be paid either. It took more than a decade for BAR to be in the state that it is now. And it will take us just as long. Even if we fork their project as a starting point.
The real issue that we've been experiencing is the malicious actors. These won't go away with a new engine.
And I don't often agree with Ftx, but I agree with this:

With a new engine everything will be different. Everything will feel different. Players will experience the game different. If we built our own engine and/or game then it will in all likelihood be a different game. The average FAForever player is part of a picky and limited crowd. Picky as in that other RTS games that work just as fine did not scratch their itch. And limited as in that as far as I can see it is not financially sound to take up such a project. That means we are both unable to satisfy the audience. And the audience is likely so limited that even if we can satisfy them it would be financially still be a disaster.
