Supreme Commander Remaster !
-
I would sincerely love to see a remaster of Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, even at full price.
Here are the news items I’d like to highlight:
A developer restored the source code of Modern Warfare 2 using AI agents.
Sanctuary: Shattered Sun is raising $1 million on Kickstarter. This looks optimistic.

Maybe one of you will get fired up by the idea and try to reach out to someone at Square Enix? One of you could lead the development of the remaster.
Why not give it a try? (begging for the game's source code doesn't count as an attempt)Reach out to Jonathan Taylor(@Visionik) — maybe he can help the project. He saved FAF once before.

ping everyone gogogo

A novel idea that has never been mentioned before. Please ping more developers.

Everyone on FAF should feel ashamed for never thinking about trying to get the source code
-
There have already been several attempts to obtain the source code, but the relevant rights holders have not been willing to provide it to FAF.
You are not the first person to suggest this, and there is certainly no reason for anyone to feel ashamed.
I believe SI-assisted reverse engineering to develop our own engine would be a far more realistic approach nowadays.

Intrigued by the topic, I asked Google directly whether a future version—like a hypothetical "ChatGPT 7"—could rework a game engine, such as the one used for Supreme Commander. It replied that this would be possible, provided it worked in stages alongside a team of developers—and that it could be done relatively quickly.
When I posed the same question regarding version 8, Google responded that it would be feasible, requiring only a single developer, and that the AI could handle the task quite rapidly.
Consequently, the potential absence of source code—which the current rights holders might not even possess—will likely prove to be only a minor obstacle in the near future.

The future you’re writing about has already arrived.
There’s an iw4L project that ported Call of Duty 4 to the Bevy engine using AI agents.
Here’s a video where he talks about the project: https://youtu.be/CSFCKJspVSo?si=Ud1KQpCSvhOIbKms
! I’d like to point out that this is not a restoration of the source code but a port to a new game engine. Essentially, one person in 3 months, using AI agents, made a remaster of Call of Duty 4 on a new game engine.-
What does this mean for FAF? It means there’s a big chance of success right now. The chances are not just to restore the source code and fix bugs, but to make Supreme Commander: Definitive Edition with improved graphics, multithreading support, and improved network code that runs anywhere (Linux, MacOS, Windows).
-
If you notice, a week has passed and the iw4L project still hasn’t been shut down/removed. This speaks to the good legal robustness of the solution. The author himself in the video interview talks about using the "clean room" technique. I believe that legal cleanliness will open up new prospects, for example, publishing on Steam.
