The current pre-release of the client ("pioneer" in the version) is only compatible to itself. So you can only play with other testers. Please be aware!

Why are neroxis based maps banned from the FAF Map Library?

Occasionally, (well, very rarely but sometimes) I end up on a generated map that is close to awesome.

I think to myself, I should make the teaks necessary to actually make it awesome, and then upload it so others can also have fun.

But there's a rule that says that is not allowed. Is that just an arbitrary decision, or is there some technical reason why?

If it is just arbitrary could we maybe revisit the reasons...? I can think of some, but also think of counters.

Afaik, if you do significant changes/improvement, it will be approved. I'll let the Vault moderators confirm this claim, but I think there was some recent discussion on the Discord about a map, and this was the conclusion.

The rule is here in general to prevent people from using the vault as some sort of personal save folder for the Neroxis maps they liked - you can just save the full map name, as it serves as the generating key. And I think preventing this bloat is good enough reason to keep this rule in place.

If you are not sure if your changes are substantial enough, you can always just draft what kind of changes you'd make, and check with the vault moderators if that's a significant enough contribution compared to the generated map.

So as not to flood the mapvault with a bunch of randomgens.

I'd love to have an option to save and load seeds though, since you can just regenerate the exact map if you save the seed. Wouldn't require any uploading. @BlackYps Something that you might be able to put on the wishlist?

Also Vault uploads must follow the Vault License, which contains the following

            D. Representations and Warranties

You represent and warrant to us that you have sufficient rights in all User Generated Content to grant FAF and other affected parties the licenses described under A. and B. above. This includes, without limitation, any kind of intellectual property rights or other proprietary or personal rights affected by or included in the User Generated Content. In particular, you represent and warrant that the User Generated Content was originally created by you (or, with respect to a User Generated Content to which others contributed besides you, by you and the other contributors, and in such case that you have the right to submit such content on behalf of those other contributors)...

Content you generated via the Neroxis Map Generator is not your original content. It's some combination of Neroxis' and Sheikah's, plus whoever else worked on it. If wrote your own map generator then all maps it makes would be your original content and you'd be free to upload those. (I think, I'm not a lawyer).

How are you going to prove and enforce what tools people used to create their maps? FAF isn't going to sue anyone over maps and mappers aren't going to sue each other. It is all just fake rules and fake legal games for the sake of it. One of the advantages of being some small, unofficial community that nobody cares about is that you could avoid all the bureaucracy and legal garbage.

If you want to edit a map gen map and upload it to the vault just do so and ignore the dumb rules. If you do a decent job nobody will know the difference. The license of the map generator says you can do whatever you want with it. It is a free software license, so there is no difference between using it as it is or making it into your own map generator.

The rule is "No maps identifiably from the Neroxis Map Generator." There are easy ways to identify Neroxis Maps that have had little to no edits to them, and if we can't identify them then they probably meet the arbitrary threshhold of effort. The main point as mentioned is that if it's just a cool seed then the seed can recreate it without using server space and cluttering the vault.

There are internal talks about amending the rule to clarify our stance on using gen as a starting point. That will likely include requiring listing the starting seed and an overview of the changes made in the description, and shifting definition of the arbitrary threshhold of effort over to vault guidelines, for which violations of can only result in the map getting hidden.

A project based on copyright infringement thinks about copyright. That's strong. 🙂
