I restarted my PC and changed to a different sound device (didn't need to change anything in bios). So far this has solved the issue.

I realised later that the mod wasn't actually selected, it was just displayed in the list.

They also can alt f4 causing the connection menu to show up for all the active players. It would be nice if alt f4 was detectable by the server.

Use the superior python client.
