    Supreme Computer Cup

Hello and welcome to the Supreme Computer Cup! Ever wondered how the various AIs of FAF compare? Well I have, and I'm hosting this tournament to get to the bottom of it. This is a 1v1 round robin BO1 tournament between AIs and AIs and AIs and Players. Every AI will play every player and every other AI on classic FAF maps. AIs will be given 1 point for a win and .5 points for a draw. The AI with the most points wins.

The number of players for this tournament is uncapped and I am especially interested in lower ranked players participating. If you are <1000 or <500 rating, please sign up by posting below.

I am also hoping to get a number of AI devs interested and perhaps some new people interested in AI development. I have linked some resources to help new AI devs get started below. The hope with posting this tournament well in advance of its start date will give new AI devs enough time to create a viable AI. AI devs please sign up with the name of your AI below.

All players will that finish the tournament will receive the Tournament Participant avatar and the winning AI dev will receive a custom avatar (coming soon) and eternal glory.

There is no restriction on the apm of your AI.

    2021 Spring Invitational

    Banner Image

Hello and welcome to the 2021 Spring Invitational Tournament. This will be a 1v1 tournament based on the format of the 2020 Summer Invitational and 2020 Fall Invitational with some minor tweaks. For those who aren’t familiar, there will be series of invites sent out to previous tournament winners, and an open qualifier on March 13th to fill the remainder of the 16 slots. This is followed by a group stage on March 20th where the top 8 players will advance to a single elimination finals bracket whose winners will receive prizes and glory .

    What’s changed?
The faction veto system for LoTS made games a lot more interesting so for this tournament we are going to use it for the group stage and finals bracket. The need for the qualifier to be fast paced means it will continue to use the old system.

In order to encourage finishing out the qualifier, qualified players will be allowed to choose which group the want to be in with the highest placing player in the qualifier choosing first, followed by second place, etc. In the interest of time and organizational complexity, invited players will be still seeded as normal.

Lastly, in order to encourage participation of up and coming players in the qualifier, all players with ladder ratings 1500+ are guaranteed a spot (up to a max of 32 players). In the event that this causes the qualifier to have more than 16 players, the first 2 rounds in the Winner's Bracket will be BO1.

It is because of these changes that I am looking for 2-4 assistant tournament directors to help out with the faction vetoes for the group stage and finals bracket. If you are interested in this please leave a post below or message me on FAF.

Would you like to contribute to the prize pool?

    The schedule:
March 12, 2021 – Deadline to accept invites
    March 13, 2021 - Open Qualifier
    March 20, 2021 – Group Stage
    March 27-28, 2021 – Finals Bracket

    The qualifier:
This is an open qualifier, all players who have not received invites are welcome to participate. It will be a double elimination tournament with BO3s in the winner's bracket and BO1s in the loser's bracket. Maps will be selected by myself from a pool for each round. Players will be seeded by ladder rating.

    The group stage:
This will consist of 4 groups of 4 players playing a round robin style tournament with the top 2 of each group advancing. Games will be BO3s. Groups will be seeded by Invitational points followed by position in the qualifier, and finally by ladder rating. Maps will be chosen by players from a pool of 10 using a veto/pick system with 2 vetoes each, players will make alternating vetoes and picks with loser seed vetoing first and higher seed picking first.

    The finals bracket:
This is a single elimination tournament with all BO5 matches expect for the championship match which will be BO7. Maps are chosen by players in a pick/veto system from a pool of 15 with 3 vetoes each, players will make alternating vetoes and picks. Players advancing from the group stage can submit one map to the finals bracket map pool (subject to Tournament Director veto). There first two rounds of the Finals Bracket will be played on Saturday and the 3rd place and championship match will be played on Sunday. The 3rd place match will start at 14:00 UTC and the championship match will follow it.

    Invitational points:
Invitational points have been updated with results of major tournaments since the Fall Invitational, all players have lost 25% (rounded up) of their points for decay, and then 8 points were given for 1st place in the Fall Invitational, 6 for 2nd, 4 for 3rd, 2 for 4th, and 1 for 5th-8th. 4 points were also given for 1st in 2020 LoTS, 3 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd, and 1 for 4th. This produced the following list of 13 invites:

    16 - Petric
    15 - Nexus
    11 - Tagada
    7 - Blackheart
    7 - TURBO2
    5 - Adjux

    2021 Spring Invitational Qualifier

Hello and welcome to the Qualifier Tournament for the 2021 Spring Invitational. The winners of this tournament will fill up the 8 remaining slots in the group stage as well as determine substitutes. Players who have received invites are not eligible to participate (a list of invites can be found here).

This is going to be a 1v1 Double Elimination bracket with BO3 games in the winners bracket and BO1 games in the losers bracket. In the interest of time, the bracket will be seeded based on ladder rating with the 16 highest ladder ratings being able to participate. Each BO3 will consist of a 5x5, 10x10, and 20x20, played in that order.

To encourage participation of up and coming players, all players with 1500+ ladder rating will be given a slot in the tournament up to a max of 32 total players. If this causes there to be more than 16 players in the tournament, the 1st 2 rounds of the Winner's bracket will be BO1.

All standard tournament rules apply. In the event of a tie in position occurs (ie 7-8th) which is needed to determine whether a player will advance to the group stage, a BO1 will be played to determine who advances. Signups will close 15 minutes before the start time.

Hello and welcome to the 2020 Fall Invitational Tournament. This will be a 1v1 tournament based on the format of the 2020 Summer Invitational with some minor tweaks. For those who aren’t familiar, there will be series of invites sent out to previous tournament winners, and an open qualifier on September 12th to fill the remainder of the 16 slots. This is followed by a group stage on September 19th where the top 8 players will advance to a single elimination finals bracket whose winners will receive prizes and glory .

    What’s changed?
I’ve decided to move the start time for the tournaments an hour earlier to 14:00 GMT so the tournaments won’t run so far into the evenings for Europeans. Also, if there is a final game required in the Qualifier, it will be a BO1 instead of BO3. Lastly, the third place match and the championship match will be played on the day after first two rounds are played.

    RE: LotS 2021 Workshop Thread

Just gonna post my thoughts on all of this:

Do not offer funds to people that placed below 5-8th.

I think this makes sense in a world where players are receiving invites to LoTS. If you were doing 4 quals, it makes sense to reward people for winning the quals.

Adjust group stage so captains choose their groups.

This is good, I think having higher seeds choose their groups first worked well for Spring Invitational. It led to more balanced groups overall and better playoffs later.

Have group stages take place on differing days for more coverage.

I think this is a good idea if you have the casters for it. I think spilting the group stage over 2 days and having the groups fight at different times makes sense from a viewer perspective. It also allows certain casters to cast groups that they aren't playing in on FAFlive. I think you should try to avoid having 4 different streams going at once for each group though.

Maybe include map gen in some way.

I think map gen was pretty successful in the Spring Invitational and having a few map gen options in a map pool to let players opt in to map gen goes a long way.

    Option A: 12 invites, 4 qualifiers

This is strongly my preference, there isn't really a need to do invites and reserved slots. The point system should reflect who the top of competitive faf. Those high level players who only want to play one tournament a year should easily be able to secure a top 4 slot in the qualifier.

    Point System Currently:

The distribution of points between tournaments seems solid but I would consider increasing the points for 2020 LoTS if you go with no reservations. I would probably double it and give 4-8 points for 9-16th. Especially considering qualifying for 2020 LotS was more difficult than qualifying for 2021 Spring Invitational.

    Tournament Date Logistics

I have Summer Invitational currently penciled in for July 10th, July 17th, and July 24-25th and Fall Invitational scribbled in for September 18th, 25th, and October 2nd and 3rd.

Overall I think this is a good direction for LotS to go. I think players sometimes miss the point that the FAF patreon (and the money that people such as myself donate) is being used to facilitate a high level competitive scene, not to just give money to the top players. If players aren't participating in the high level competitive scene, they shouldn't expect the tournaments to cater to them.

This is an important step to reviving the health of the high level tournament scene which is a useful marketing tool for FAF as well as good for broader community building.

@blackyps I'm happy to personally handle all draw bug reports. I doubt there would be that many, and the work required to review them would be small compared to the average report. Plus making draw bug a bannable offensive is likely to reduce the number of people who exploit it regularly.

Should I pause the game once your ACU drops to 2477 health and ask if you will agree to a draw through the diplomacy menu, and if not, then I'm allowed to ctrl-k on your ACU? If you think someone is going to ctrl-k on you, why don't you just pause the game and offer a draw before you go under 2500?

Yes, player who will ctrl-k should pause the game and ask for a draw.

@FtXCommando Fair, but I still think a 60/40 spilt for a showmatch does not encourage players to try their hardest which should be the point of a showmatch.

    RE: FAFLive ShowMatches

Personally, I would like to see money going to showmatches being used to match wagers by the players participating (ie $50 from each player and $100 from FAF) with winner takes all. This would encourage more serious play from players as well as make it more exciting for viewers rather than watching BH and petric play a BO7 over $20.

    RE: FAF League Invitational Series

A compromise might be to seed in the top 4 players from my Invitational Points system after the Fall Invitational (currently, nexus, petric, tagada, blackheart) as top seed in each group. Then fill the next 8 slots with ladder invitational slots and hold one qualifier to fill the last 4 + subs.

This allows the very top players to be invited based on high level tournament performance, and playing the ladder invitationals is heavily incentivized and there are still some open slots for random people to join in.
