    • Add the Tombstones from the 2025 April Fool's Update as a Permanent Feature

Based on my experience on the official FAF Discord over the past week, the reception to the tombstones being dropped upon an ACU's death has been positive. In fact, there have been a number of people who have suggested for this feature to be retained permanently. So I figured it was worth compiling these comments into one forum post:

I don't really have anything else to add the forum post beyond this. Maybe this could spark a discussion on why the tombstones shouldn't be added into the game? I'm personally all for it as well because it gives that little bit of utility where you can pinpoint where someone died and who their killer was.

      U1100 1v1 Tournament IV

      Date

17th of May at 15:00 BST. Convert to your local timezone here.

      Format

The format is either Double Elimination or Round Robin, depending on the total number of participants. This will be finalised 24 hours before the start of the tournament.

      Double Elimination

Double Elimination is a tournament format in which the players will start off in the winner's bracket, playing just 1 game. The winning player advances to the next round, the losing player drops into the loser's bracket. If the player loses again, they are eliminated from the tournament. Completely winning the loser's bracket brings you back into the finals of the winner's bracket for a chance at redemption. The player coming from the winner's bracket has to beat their opponent only once. The player coming from the loser's bracket will have to beat their opponent twice.

    • RE: The State of FAF

I've personally only been active in the FAF community for almost a year so I suppose I'm still relatively new. One aspect of the state of FAF community that I strongly dislike is the amount of friction publicly displayed between the different teams involved in FAF. Hang around the Discord long enough and you'll see long arguments between the coloured names over certain issues in or out of the game. Whether the issue is actually substantial or not, I can't tell. But I feel like this sort of dirty laundry being aired out in the public for all server members to see only serves to provide an air of animosity between contributors that brings down the vibes of the place and could potentially deter future contributors. I've had contributor and moderating roles in other community Discords and there were usually rules to present a united front while mostly civil debates and arguments took place behind closed doors, away from the public eye. So coming here and not really seeing that was a bit of a culture shock for me. At this point, whether any change on this would actually do anything isn't even clear to me since it appears that this has been the way it is for quite awhile but it is something that occupies my mind from time to time.

I don't really have an educated opinion on game balance because I don't really think I'm qualified to comment on that. Having to groundfire T3 Sera subs is annoying though.

Replay-review channel is great, although you really only see the same few trainers helping out in the threads. Whether the rest of the team are inactive or prefer helping people privately. Who knows. But I have no complaints regarding the quality and speed of advice given there.

CGN is a nice step forward, the gimmicks are interesting enough to keep it different from a typical mapgen lobby and the emphasis on voice channels gives it a much more relaxed and social environment.

I look forward to more frequent tournaments involving the lower-ranked members of the community. Even without any substantial rewards, trying to win in a more competitive setting is a good incentive for improvement as well as reaching out to others for help and practice. It may not attract the most viewers but it's a net positive for the participants and the community.

If there's one addition I would like to see, it would be a more transparent process on how maps are selected for the map pool in matchmaking queues. I don't have issues with what maps are in the pool for my rating (1100~ ladder) but to my untrained eye, the rotating pool feels pretty random.

Of course, I wish servers were more stable and resistant to DDOS attacks but I don't have reasonable suggestions on how to achieve that so it might as well be a pipe dream.

How many games are played at each stage (assuming playoffs not round robin) - BO1? 3?

It's a BO1 for all games (Upper and Lower Bracket) except for the Grand Finals. There, it will be a "BO3" but the Upper Bracket finalist will have a 1-game advantage. So they will have to only win one game whereas the Lower Bracket finalist will have to win two games to be crowned the winner.

      Time & Date

      13:00 UTC, 9th August 2025

Note: Signs-ups will close 24 hours before the tournament starts.

      Format

      • If there are less than 8 participants, the tournament will be a Best-of-3 (BO3) Single Elimination followed by a BO3 in the grand finals.
      • If there are 8 or more participants; The format will have a group stage with a Best-of-2 (BO2) using the Swiss system, then a BO3 in the semis and grand finals.

      Single Elimination

Single Elimination is a tournament format in which the players will play until someone has won 2 of the 3 games in each round.
The losing player is immediately eliminated from the tournament.

      Swiss

Competitors meet one-on-one in each round and are paired using a set of rules designed to ensure that each competitor plays opponents with a similar running score, but does not play the same opponent more than once (across multiple rounds). Top 4 participants in the group stage will move on to the semifinals.

In the first round, competitors are paired with each other using their seed positions which are based off their 1v1 rating. In subsequent rounds, competitors are sorted according to their cumulative scores and are assigned opponents with the same or similar score up to that point. For example, if you won 2:0 against your opponent in Round 1, your opponent in Round 2 will likely be someone who also won 2:0 in Round 1. The intent of this system is to provide more even matchups for all participants regardless of their performance.

For each round in a BO2 system during the group stage: 2 wins against your opponent gives you 3 points, a win and a loss gives you 1 point, and losing both matches nets you 0 points.

The total number of rounds in the group stage is determined by the total number of participants:

Number of Participants Number of Rounds
      8 3
      9-16 4 (5 if BO1)
      17-32 5 (6 if BO1)

Note: To keep the tournament duration manageable, the BO2 Swiss format may be swapped to a BO1 Swiss format depending on total number of participants and their feedback

I think a slightly more serious image, to match the look and feel of the game, would be required. Otherwise, I think it's a fun addition that should be added.

That's a fair comment. I reckon making tombstones that fit each faction's design language is doable (UEF: Blocky, Cybran: Angular, Aeon: Round/Curved, Seraphim; Asymmetric). It is more work though and I have 0 knowledge on making models myself, unfortunately.

@IndexLibrorum said in Add the Tombstones from the 2025 April Fool's Update as a Permanent Feature:

Does it make sense to have a ACU wreck instead of a stone tombstone? I know the ACU explodes in a big bang but if all my 2000 best faf friends are willing to suspend disbelief on the ACU chasis being able to withstand a nuclear explosion well enough to leave a blackened wreck I won't argue against it. But yes, nice function, let's keep it.

The only concern I can think about regarding an ACU wreck is that it can be confused for reclaim at a glance, depending on how it is implemented. Do we have ACU wrecks in the game files by default?

Thanks for all the comments so far, guys!

      @Pro

Hi, your 1v1 rating was 1600~ on the 17th of February, 2025. Then it drastically dropped to 1082 as of 3rd of May 2025. This drop from such a high peak is too sudden and drastic for me to allow you to participate in this tournament. It will be too unfair for the other participants who are expected to perform more comfortably below the 1100 1v1 rating threshold. Instead, someone of your higher skill level will be more suited for the U1500 tournament when it is hosted.
