@macdeffy if you don't delete Forged Alliance's config file in between each change there's no reason for your changes to have any effect on Forged Alliance.
deleting the Forged Alliance's config file is part of the fix it's a non-optional step.

I'm aware of this. This is reproducible for me on a fresh install. Merely offering something that works for me in hopes it helps others.

When I tried to get a Logitech surround sound headset to work on stereo, I got the below advice from Logitech.
Doesn't seem to solve it completely, but a step in the right direction. Leaving it here as it might help somebody.

          Thank you for contacting us.

We kindly request you to follow the below mentioned.

          1. Go to Device Manager (WIN+PAUSE|BREAK).
          2. Click on the View tab at the top and select Devices by the container.
          3. Look for your headset/speaker and expand it. You are looking for the named device,
          4. Right-click and click Properties and then select the Driver tab.
The Driver Provider should be Logitech β€” if it’s Microsoft you don't need to change the driver.
          5. If the driver is Logitech, click Update Driver and then Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list... > and choose USB Audio Device.
          6. Click Next. This should update back to Microsoft's standard drivers.

⦁ Update to latest Logitech Audio Driver:

          1. On the same device in Device Manager, right-click on Properties and then click the Driver tab.
          2. Click Update Driver > Browse my computer for driver software.
          3. Click the Browse button to the right of Search for drivers in this location:
Navigate to: C:\ProgramData\LGHUB\depots\2xxxx\driver_audio\ (note that although the five-digit number might be different, you are looking for a folder containing the driver audio folder).
          4. Click Next to update to the latest audio driver.

          ⦁ If issues persist:

          1. Go to Device Manager (WIN+PAUSE|BREAK).
          2. Click on View at the top and select View devices by the container.
          3. Look for your device in the list and expand it. You are looking for the named device,
          4. Right-click and select Uninstall device.
          5. Check to Delete the driver software for this device and then click Uninstall.
          6. Unplug the device and plug it back into a different USB port. It should re-enumerate and be detected in G HUB.
          7. G HUB should then download the driver for your device.

          Regards,
          Daryl Seaman

I recently came across this website http://www.indirectsound.com, which is an app aimed to support old d3d/eax games. I tried it, and it did create a log file indicating that it is loading when FA launches. While spatial sound option still can't be enabled. I did enable the 7.1 surround on my headphones ( that would normally cause the same issues as enabling spatial sound) and with this running everything sounded normal. Enabled virtualization in enhancements, and everything still sounded normal.

I do not have a set of surround speakers currently to test out, so i can't test any speaker options beyond stereo, but perhaps someone can report back and see if this works?

Didn't work for me sadly. With the "dsound.dll" placed in (\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\bin) I still have the same issue with the Logitech G533. All the gamesounds are amplified. For example, when zoomed out, I hear all the ACUs building (in a replay).

You would need to place the file in c:\programdata\faforever\bin\ for this to work in FAF

If i find time this weekend, i think I'll dual boot XP and 10 on an older computer. Get a baseline and compare the differences if any, assuming i can find my old 7.1 setup.

so I discovered at least something!! I ran FAF on an old XP computer just to see how it behaved. Even on XP with various sound cards, Realtek, Sound Blaster, etc. it was much the same. Clearly it didn't support multiple speakers back then either regardless of what i tried.

However in the dsound.ini that goes along with the dsound.dll file, there is an option called milesCompatibility = false. Setting this to true absolutely has an effect. With virtualization turned on and/or Spatial Audio, or 5.1 speakers, etc, the ambient noise that is so overpowering when zoomed out, goes away. Perhaps it's a little more pronounced zoomed in close. Maybe some of the sound effects are balanced a bit different.

But clearly having an effect nonetheless. There are multiple settings that may tweak the sound even further in dsound.ini that i'll investigate, or if you have an app that gives you custom EQ for games, that can be tuned further.

Didn't have any crashes or other strange things in the last week I've used it. Perhaps this can be of use to others. Maybe some audiophile will give it a test and will notice differences that my poor ears cannot.

                                https://www.indirectsound.com/downloads/IndirectSound_0_20.zip

                                requires x86 visual c++ 2010 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999

messed around with other settings. didn't seem to have any effect. Ambient energy sounds prob a bit too pronounced when zoomed in.

In Windows 11, disabling this setting, fixed my issues with a stereo setup:

Everything worked perfectly before the latest unanticipated extended server down time, but now my audio has bugged out (i.e factory select sounds don't play, and some combat sounds don't play etc). Anyone know of a way to fix this, or why the downtime might have affected anything?

I've also checked my audio settings and I am sure it is on stereo and on the right frequency (before I reset the game.pref file). Anything else I could do? Perhaps reinstall fa from steam?

Apparently for no reason at all, the only way to fix this is restarting Windows (turning it off and then back on does not work, only restarting works). To be specific, my issue was that certain audio sounds would only play once per game (i.e selecting commander sound, factory select sound, commander shooting sounds, music tracks etc, and then on subsequent instances, these sounds would no longer play).
