    • RE: Why would you have left FAF?

Hello, i'm not sure if i'm supposed to be here but I was just looking for my old map thread and noticed I wasn't banned.

If anyone cares, I left FAF around 2021/2022 roughly. That wasn't "I left but I still posted on discord" or whatever - but I forgot about FAF entirely and moved on with my life.

I wouldn't say that the game itself had any impact in leaving but it became too much of a chore to play if i wanted to take it anything other then playing Gorki or some other insane thing with a close few friends. The 1v1 ladder took hours for an Australian to find a game and honestly, the mapgen didn't help with anything either. It was more about the "work" I did, which was mostly mapping and then administration for mapping later on.

I am/was a creative person and so contributing here felt like doing "work", or a job that I wanted to do even. I think that is why I managed to become so invested in the status of this community and the "work" I put into it. I still put the same level of passion into my actual work, and it fustrates me to a similar level, though i'm not going to make a forum essay about why I can't hit tolerances on a lathe any time soon.

This is also what I think when I see people here fight endlessly about contributions that align with that they do in real life - you need to seperate what you do here from the work that actually progresses your career. And if you're going to put anything here into your resume (hello jip) you need to not spend your life here getting into heated circular arguements that cannot bring forth a positive compromise.

One day, I describe it as a "cable" in my mind snapping. My attachment to FAF if you will just left after years of arguing strongly about anything I deemed relevant here. I actually left design as a career entirely here and moved into engineering. I can now proudly say that I am "Craftsman" biass of the Australian Defence Force, and spend my time creating shit out of metal instead of making maps.

If i had any advice for you all now, and I do:

      • You need to limit your attachement to the "work" you do here. You are not posting 5000 word essays about how you're going to rope over people not liking the work that actually earns you income and I don't really see a reason why you (or past me..) should be doing it here, for free.
      • If you want people to take your balance issues or etc seriously, show that you are serious by making it into a mod that you can show off. It's really easy to do. It's interesting to see the same people arguing on the same problem for YEARS on end because they're basically asking someone else to put in the "hard" yards. Stat changes can be as simple as some copy pasting and changing a value, so just make it and test your own ideas.
      • And ultimately, you need to remember that you are here because you want to play a fun video game. IF you want to "work", you should go and work at your actual job. Users in the LOUD project are NOT having the same problem this community has, because they're a group of people who just want to sit down and play a silly game about blowing up robots, not fighting for the sake of their white collar careers every single day on a half functioning forum that hasn't been visually upgraded since it was implemented. When was the last time you sat down and just played survival with your mates? Sent all 4 ACU's at one guy who doesn't speak your language, and were laughing about the 20 global elo you got for your trouble? if you're on the forums and you post here every day, this stuff might not be the core of why you show up anymore but, it needs to be - because it's why you came here in the first place.

      Anyway, just my two cents.
I poked my head in earlier because I saw my old friends here talking about FAF drama on discord. It upsets me to see the same people trying to fight for their lives over the same topics with no real chance for anything changing. A battle that lasts until the other guy quits isn't healthly, and even if i agree with what I said years ago, i can't imagine why I would write so much on a video game forum about it. FtXCommando needs to hit the gym and not the keyboard buttons 4head

Also, if you're reading this and you have the required admin permissions, you may unhide, and enable ranked games on all of the maps under my account. All i ask is that if i search for them, is that I see people having fun playing them. Oh, and credit any edits.

Good luck, and don't actively make the place I spent my time as a young adult any worse that I once thought it was, cheers!

Looks like council or association once again hiding shit happening to faf.

I've been quite open in my statement that the upper management of FAF are filled with limp wristed, sociopathic rat-swine and I decided that I did not want my hard work associated with such an entity. What did you assume had happened?

To the point of the OP though, I never made any 4v4 maps of particular merit. I usually made 1v1 / 2v2 / 3v3 maps.

I'm sure there are plenty of maps you could find if you spent an hour looking, you just need to lower your expectations from assuming maps will be triple A quality.

"He does it for free" after all.

rezy-noob said in On the upcoming removal of a map uploaders power to 'unrank' a map:

make all the (new) maps unranked and in order to rank them up,you can make an appeal.

A whitelist comes up more or less every month here, but noone here seems to realise that at best you now have a single maybe two people who actually bother to put the effort in to hide maps.

having to create an appeal and thus have your maps wait until it is processed could take your maps mutiple months to become rated.

What will you do when you think "you're not like those astro mappers" and yet your map is sitting in the pile buried underneath them? Cry to my former team? ask for special treatment? OR maybe you think that the people in the team should just do the admin faster? Sorry buddy but "they work for free." And I don't see anyone else signing up.

Maybe get off the forum and stop making up fantasies that are impossible to achieve -

    • RE: Legend of the Stars PLAYER CARDS!

I'm not going to give you too much shit because I gave FtX a beatdown when he showed me your prior version, and thus you iterated on it to make it somewhat better than it was.

Please fix your alignment though because literally every single element is off in some way.

      alt text

I'm assuming you turned off snapping in Illustrator because normally stuff like this cannot happen unless you want it to, and you dont want it to...

      also perhaps

      1. Dont use gradents on the outside, green and purple normally work together but right now it looks mucky and doesnt fit the rest of the card. (I said earlier: everything looks like it was made in isolation) Just make one part purple and another green or whatever.
      2. Remove what i can only assume is the "player colours" next to the image. People can tell what the colours are by the card, just make the image fill the whole box.

That being said, it's not just the literal facts of the feedback that matter to people, it's also the way you convey it.

And do you think I am some kind of asocial ape who doesnt know how he comes off or what? The harder the backlash, the more likely you're going to act on it.

FAF would just give you - metaphorically - another completely apathetic "haha yeah i guess..." response and one might decide not to change anything, or even think the respondent LIKES the work, as seen in the (now deleted, lol) tourney pool discussion.

My opinion, my "consultation" even, is something I consider valuable to me and if I choose to say something I feel no need to cowtow my words to people who cry on an internet forum.

All of this whining is completely unneeded and offtopic, you take the advice and you make of it what you choose, no matter the "value" in it. Don't derail the thread with this crap.

@biass I mean it's a work in progress that has a couple of hours only so that's why it's so sloppy[1]. Also the other "menus"/scenes are going to be updated as well to fit the blue/grey theme[2]. as BlackYps said too, I do agree it's too slow and looks like a loading screen. I wanted to fish some feedback before keep working on it to know what the community thought[3].

      1. You asked for feedback, so you recieved it.
      2. You didn't specify this at any point before using it as justification.
      3. Yes, and so you got it.

femboy said in FAFLIVE Scene transition for LoTS (and channel):

call it effortless (by saying "where?" is the effort)[1] and call it cringe is a bit unmotivating. I have a thick skin so it doesn't bother me that much[2]. However, you could say the same without adding these comments. I appreciate your feedback but there are better ways to convey the same message[3]

      1. Don't take it the wrong way, im asking Askaholic where he specifically sees the effort.
      2. You wrote 3 paragraphs complaining about it, you kick people from discussions when people give you feedback. You don't have a thick skin and thinking otherwise is total delusion.
      3. I know people have a nice old time here in isolated pansyland but if you want to somehow take this into the real world, where clients are paying you lots of money to secure a greater return on their projects - they have no obligation to be nice to you and you will suffer if you continue to act this way.

Yesterday I watched as a client tried to bully the shit out of a muslim writer to add elements to a story that the writer considered religious heresy. Having a place full of laymen with no expectations is the ultimate easy mode and you need to remember that.

femboy said in FAFLIVE Scene transition for LoTS (and channel):

    • RE: FAFLIVE Scene transition for LoTS (and channel)

The wololo example you gave is pretty poor in the way of mainstream esport transitions -

But it works because it is decent looking enough, maintains the style of the stream, and is FAST so that people can see what they actually came there to view in the first place because the majority of people don't actually care about it.

Yours is SLOW, and none of the transition elements harmonise with eachother, or with any of the other menus, and neither does the logo, and the parts on the logo don't even harmonise with other parts on the logo, etc.

It's the same issue you have with anything you've posted on this forum, everything seems to be made in isolation without any care about how they work together.

Right now you've detracted from the experience compared to just using the generic fadein/out, because you're just adding mindless bloat.

    • RE: Caster UI Mod Functionality Brainstorming

You should put the ui on the bottom. If you click on a unit for any reason, and you’ll be doing that during a cast: you’re now obscuring a solid third of the screen with the caster ui and the selection menu. This problem will be worse when you attempt to ghetto rig this product for anything higher than a 1v1. At least the ui functions of the game around the top of the screen can be hidden or used in synergy with the ui - because the top half of the viewport was made to be kept clear of anything outside of the most critical information.

Also someone please explain why it’s made with slab serif and no tracking LMAO

So it's not out of any reasonable project scope, you just think we shouldn't prioritize it. That is something different to be discussed then.

Yes, and I think it’s out of any reasonable scope because it is so low priority. Stupid comment.

@cheeseberry said in Downsides of the Advanced Strategic Icons mod:

which is demonstrably untrue, as shown by some of the people here in this thread.

I know you’re new, but I shouldn’t need to explain to any veteran that people will say they want to do something and then won’t do it - including me. This is very extensive free work with a long iterative design phase and large amounts of tedious menial gruntwork. Claims to work on it amount to nothing.

You would be very brave to want to buck the trend but I would hesitate to call it smart - most people need to do jobs that allow them to eat.

@cheeseberry said in Downsides of the Advanced Strategic Icons mod:

Changing the game icons is out of any reasonable scope? Why?

Because if you're going to spend money, you should spend it on fixing stuff that is far more important. People are in here trying to argue if this "change" (because ASI is not a fix) is even a positive one. Why should you spend money on this instead of for example, the terrible client ui? 99.99% of FAF users are going to be using that UI. That is not the case for an icon mod.

cheeseberry said in Downsides of the Advanced Strategic Icons mod:

The ASI guy literally proved that it could be done,

And? Just because it can be done doesn't mean it should. Do you remember when FAF made the text colours correspond to faction and people literally couldn't read the text when they chose cybran? It was "proven to could be done" but that doesn't mean anything.

cheeseberry said in Downsides of the Advanced Strategic Icons mod:

@biass Changing the game icons is out of any reasonable scope? Why?

The ASI guy literally proved that it could be done, albeit there is still much to improve there of course.

Also it matters to quite a lot of the most involved and contributing community members. See for example Jip above who has put in at least like 2 months of full time work improving the game, or any of the people here who are sitting on various unpaid council/admin positions out of their own good will. If their voice doesn't count, whose does?

Why are you telling this to me? Did you forget like a month ago I was still a councilor here? Did you forget Jip worked with me on many projects? I don't get the point of this outside of this being some pointless arguing. A word of warning though, don't speak on behalf of other people. Like 3 dudes have come in to say they like the icon mod. That's not "quite a lot" and that doesn't mean they're willing to drop donation money on it instead of important shit.
