Hello and good day to any readers,

tl;dr: I'm a coward, is flaming in pvp games common?

I'm sorry if this is off-topic, but I could not find any more fitting category.
Unfortunately I suffer from pretty severe self-worth issues and pretty much all I know from pvp are commented games on youtube of semi- or high-rank. Very often in these games I see a LOT of flaming of teammates and, not gonna lie, I don't have a particularly high mental fortitude for this kind of thing. However, I've never played any pvp games, because im afraid of exactly this. And because of this I have thus far only played coop or survival.

So my question in the end is: Is this common occurance or are these games outliers? Just in higher skill games or everywhere?

I think it's quite common. On average you lose 50% of your games in PvP. Not everybody likes that.

You don't need to play PvP. Just open a lobby vs xAI and find some people wanting the same. For some reason people are usually to lazy to host a lobby but would join a game quite fast.

1v1, no teammates, can properly mute opponent at the start.

Thank you so much for the fast replies and honesty, it is quite unfortunate that it is quite common. I quite enjoy playing in teams, so 1v1s aren't very interesting to me. I did host plenty of PvE games before i took a break, but I would have wanted to test myself against real players, learn metas, build orders, etc. I think there is a lot of fun to be had in that. Sadly, if flaming is so common, that is just not an option for me
I did see very competent AI's being made by the community who would be quite a challenge, but I REALLY prefer playing in teams.....I'm just weird like that.
All things considered......maybe I'll have a go at it again, but surely not pvp by the looks of it.

If you have a problem regarding the flaming, a UI mod that mutes chat could be interesting? Depending on if you want to communicate with your team.
You will find this in any game though. It is a competitive game and people get too invested into it and flame / complain (me included).

If it's a team game, of course I'd want to communicate and plan with my teammates. I'm aware its everywhere, but there's still a big difference between games.
If I asked people what the most toxic game community is I'm pretty sure 90% would answer league of legends......for good reason.
I can play games where flaming is the exception, but not the rule.

Some maps and games are more likely to flame than others.
My advice - stay clear of setons and dual gap, people get very angry over small things and/or not playing the way they expect.

3v3 matchmaker is usually fairly chill (but there are exceptions), partly because there's less of a pre-set meta
Astro craters maps used to be relatively chill as well but it's been a few years since I've played them

there are occasionally team games vs AI which are fairly rare to have flaming

inevitably you'll come across some people who are toxic, but it's definitely a relatively small minority of games I play (I usually play 3v3 TMM). There's also 1v1 where it's less likely since there's no teammate to complain about how you play.

FAF is one of the most loving communities ive came across of, and I can certainly say that flaming is in fact not common. Surely in low ranks some mad russian will be spittin hate, but it’s not a regular occurance. Faf players are more likely to be supportive then hateful - keep in mind that most of the people who play here are old and other competitive games have kids playing them

Also setons lobbies are friendly and supportive, people there want new souls and are willing to help out a new player rather then flame them for not knowing something, so I recommend those

I've randomly come across this post.

It's a common thing in pretty much every online game that people will flame each other. All it is is a coping mechanism so they must not admit they made a mistake themselves. It's really just the easy way out for being anonymous on the internet. There is no way of saying this is common or uncommon across a community as a whole as it's mostly invididual. Estimating how often it will happen to you is nearly impossible. Sometimes you will be flamed three times a day, sometimes it won't happen for two years straight. But there is a tendency: The bigger and the younger (on average) the community the more likely it is that people will flame, as they don't expect to bump into the other one ever again. FAF is a small, "well aged" community, and therefore less likely to be that way, as you for sure will bump into someone again.

What usually helps is narrowing down the amount of anonymity to a minimum by playing with people you know through joining smaller clans / communities.

I, for instance, happen to run a beginners group within the FAF Dojo. It's me and my co-trainer running training sessions with up to a dozen trainees (0-1300 rated) three times a week, in the EU evening hours. Our youngest trainee is ~20 years old, our oldest is ~60 years old. We have gay / trans people, furries... We welcome everyone and respect each other. It's about having fun and learning together.
