Units canceling orders and act on their own??
-
I Just had a ranked match on dualgap. My units continiued canceling my orders and then acted on their own instead. Is this a cheat or something? I asked ingamechat and the reply was shared units or something. Anyone has an idea what it was? I find this unacceptable.
-
Sounds like it was a union control game, which is a setting that allows everyone on your team to control your units.
-
It's a horrible setting that all the dual Gap noobs (1.2k+) started to use because they can't stand when their game doesn't go absolutely perfect meta every time. This setting SHOULD NOT be a ranked condition imo but it for some reason it is but that's a whole different conversation/thread.

I agree it should be unranked as long as there is no proper UI to support the feature (e.g., you have no way of knowing who is controlling your units). Additionally, being forced to use the cheat menu or the console to switch perspectives might not be a problem for players who know their way around the game, but it is not acceptable for newer or casual players.

I agree with Nory here. But making it unranked is the wrong way to go, as i can already tell if that happens it will take 3+ years until it gets a usable UI (or its just forgotten). I think this could happen faster if this was actually brought some attention instead.
But at the same time you could say the player could look at the ingame options... with the filter that excludes values that are set to default its not that hard...
The comparison is funny though that to get a mod ranked which does not impact balance or gameplay is almost impossible but at the same time we have essentially clown settings with no usable UI that are ranked

Your point is valid, but I philosophically disagree with keeping it ranked as a means to raise awareness of the problem.
I believe SSB2 or some variations of it allow players to change armies by simply clicking on the respective names (at least when cheating is enabled). This is a good feature and perhaps something to consider.
-
@Nory in theory you are right, but unranking it will not give it more attention, it will make everyone just forget about it.
I think its a good thing ( in theory ) that this and shared armies is ranked.

I think that it is insane to have to shared armies/union control as a ranked condition in its current form and cant see why it would be allowed under any form at all. I played a game recently where a teammate kept microing my commander towards the water as I am trying to leave the water due to 2k hp and torp bombers attacking me. I actually had to pause the game to tell whoever it is to stop. It felt like he was trying to make sure I died so he could get my base. Was completely insane. Same game a teammate takes a group of engines that I really needed and puts them in a transport (he canceled my factory que so he could make a transport) Losing my build que without warning and taking a huge amount of build power I was staging for my own purposes. Its all counter to what a ranked game should be imo.
In that game I was doing just fine (ended up getting blamed for winning the game) so I really didnt need any help or whatever the hell that was suppose to be. Even in a scenario where I am holding the team back due to my bad apm why does my team get the advantage of a teammate picking up my slack? Imagine my opponent who is battling hard against me and is gaining the upper hand just to suddenly feel me have advanced apm and push back the advantage making moves that I had no business doing.
I think there are situations where this could be abused as well.
If I am a 1.3k playing in a 3v3 and my 2 teammate's are 2k while our opponents have three 1.7k-1.8k players my opponent should be able to push me as maybe their only way to gain an advantage that game.....but they cant push me because the 2k players on my team are micoing all my stuff and negating the advantage my opponent should have.
IMO the settings (aside from maps and veto's and such obviously) the pros use in the LOTS tourney and the like should be the ranked settings. There shouldn't be all of these other crazy modes that make for a completely different match and essential completely different FAF experience.
I am ok with Nomads being ranked but it wasn't that long ago that xtreme wars was a ranked game mode and I was happy to see when that got removed from the client. So too should this setting and those like it.
At the very least it should be unranked until it goes through the arduous process similar to the decapitation work that Phong and others are engaged in.

Let me explain in more detail why this feature is not yet suitable to be ranked. This earned me a lot of flack on one of your streams for some reason; maybe a FAF lobby was simply the wrong place to talk about this. No offense taken, obviously.
- No indication of who is controlling your units (critical).
- There is a bug that causes all of your engineers to be labeled 'idle' when switching armies. I am not sure if this has been fixed by now.
- The UI lies to you. The game indicates that you are playing against player
x
. This does not necessarily have to be the case however, you could also be playing against playery
, or even against playersx, y, z
. This is not game-breaking, but it would obviously make more sense if player names were hidden entirely. - Essentially, most of what Dorset mentioned.
If you want to decrease the chance of it getting forgotten, you can make an issue on GitHub. Again, keeping it ranked to spread awareness of the issues with the feature should not be the modus operandi here. It cannot be compared to shared armies either, as that setting looks to be feature-complete.

Some months ago, I made a suggestion in the Discord FAF Game Development channel to at least have a notification in the team chat, when someone changes POV (from X to Y). Unfortunately, it got no traction, or it was simply too labor-intensive to make it happen back then.
My gut tells me (well, by watching random replays), the game-mode gets more and more popular and that is why some QOL additions are needed. I like the mode, and it would be amazing if it would be higher on the priority list.
So far, what is needed, IMO:
- Notification in team chat when someone changes player POV
- Union-control should be opt-in, (like in WC3) and automatically enabled when the player dies/disconnects
- Bonus: Make it possible to see which units are getting controlled with a different unit selection color (like in WC3)
- and bug fix mentioned from above poster
I would blindly guess, the developers already were thinking of something like that, when they introduced the game-mode, but lack of time, or SC engine itself makes it complicated/impossible to make those features happen.
