The 3d CPUs of AMD are extremely good at this game and can manage up to 10.000 units without slowing down the game. I can recommend the 7800x3d, or the 5800x3d. This game is primarily CPU limited; it runs fine on much weaker GPUs than the 2080ti

Thank you, that's what i was not sure about. In the past all you needed was IPC and fast RAM but with chips like the i9 lineup its like 300+ watts...
I think i'll give AMD a try, much lower TDP and this 3D cache sounds amazing

I was assuming the X3D parts would do well in FA, but hadn't seen much mention of them.
Do you have any idea how much of a boost an X3D part gives over it's non X3D version or the difference between a 5600x and 5800X3D would be?

I have no direct comparison, you can use any existing material that compares the two. As one example that resulted from a quick search (do turn off the sound):
You can relatively safely assume that the impact on the FPS in these games is identical in Supreme Commander. And specifically for Supreme Commander, it does not only apply to the framerate but also to the simulation. Which matters most when playing alone (against AI or a campaign, etc), as in a multiplayer game it runs as fast as the slowest CPU. But you can be certain that you're not the slowest CPU when you're rolling a 5600x3d.
Based on basic tests a 5600x3d, the 7800x3d and the 7950x3d can manage about 10k units in a 'regular scenario' without the game slowing down. Which is pretty impressive

I had watched a Hardware Unboxed video covering the X3D parts recently and they looked very impressive, was just curious if anyone had done FAF tests with them (in case something else would be a bottleneck). Looks like they're definitely the way to go for gaming.
I got a 10850K a few years ago at a good price, before the X3D chips were a thing, but kind of regret not going with the AM4 platform.

Did anyone test how much overclocking on R5 5600X helps the game ? Like enable XMP and/or do that tweak for up to extra 200Mhz boost ?The game is largely single core so extra boost on 1/2 cores would be very easy to cool.
Any extra tweaks, like disabling multithreading or something else on this cpu ?

Do you have any data on performance ? I am on 5600x and get severe lagging when playing with 11 M28's on 20x20 maps. After about an hour, depending on unit limitations, it will go down to -5. Mainly im interested on effect of x3d, to figure out if 5700x3d would be a worthy upgrade for me

This game is not made for 11 AIs of any kind. The Lua thread that AIs run on is single threaded. No matter how good your CPU is, you'll never be able to run 11 AIs.
My reference was to typical pvp games, campaign maps and/or games with 1 - 3 AIs.

Sorry to necro, but this still seems like the most appropriate thread.
I'm a bit illiterate when it comes to how the performance on FAF relates to processor clock speed, cache, etc, so I was wondering if anyone has any experience running faf on a newer intel core ultra processor? I'm about to pull the trigger on a system with a core ultra 7 155h, which should do everything else I need without breaking a sweat but has a single core base frequency of only 1.4ghz (with boost up to 4.8 though), so I'm concerned it won't handle the simulation in faf very well. I was always the low bar player who brought the simulation speed to a crawl on my old 4th gen i3 equipped tablet, so I'm really hoping that the clock speed doesn't tell the whole story
Edit: Never mind, I went ahead with the purchase because it was right for my other computer needs, and as a nice bonus my faf cpu score is now 96, so I'm pretty satisfied

Getting my new setup tomorrow, i just need more cores to work with and an 9950x3d is far to expensive so i choose an i7-14700k, hope more ipc and more cache helps
Old i7-10700k max OC = 89 points
Old cheap i9-11900k got 90 and with sharp OC and some ram tweaking it got to 84
Cheap i7-14700k will follow but I think 80 or lower -
i7-14700k stock 70 points
