The current pre-release of the client ("pioneer" in the version) is only compatible to itself. So you can only play with other testers. Please be aware!
JRE is fine.
I would try to redownload and reinstall the client files from scratch. Maybe some files just got lost along the way. It happens on windows too from time to time and you just need to redownload.
