    • Supreme Commander is crashing on launch

Supreme Commander is crashing on launch with an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. It crashes with Setons maps but not for the 'Fields of Isis' map which suggests the problem might be related to water.

I think the problem started with a recent update to Supreme Commander. I re-installed Supreme Commander from a DVD and FAF from the web site but this has not helped.

The ' warning: GetResource: Invalid name "" ' messages in the log below might be significant. Please help.

    • Disconnects While Playing Supreme Commander

Could you please indicate the current status of announcement 'Addressing Severe Connectivity Issues - What has happened!'

      https://forum.faforever.com/topic/6182/addressing-severe-connectivity-issues-what-has-happened

When I play I still see far more disconnects than there used to be on FAF.

The disconnects usually involve two players disconnecting from each other while all other connections remain. The game stops and takes a few minutes to show who has disconnected from whom and then generally several more minutes trying to persuade one of them to exit so the game can continue.

Most games have at least one disconnect and it's common to have several disconnects in one game. Games are frequently won/lost due to disconnects as a player and all their buildings/units disappearing usually has a big effect.

I think the degraded game experience is making people leave FAF so they can play other more reliable games.

    • RE: Problem when trying to update to the latest FAF Client

Looks like the underlying problem was caused by Norton Antivirus Data Protector.

I deleted the old 'C:\Program Files\Downlord's FAF Client' folder and down loaded the latest FAF client installer from https://www.faforever.com/

When I tried to run this I got a "Data Protector blocked a suspicious action by faf_windows-x64_2022_4_0(1).exe" message.

I managed to get Norton to exclude this process and then everything seemed to run okay.

    • RE: Supreme Commander is crashing on launch

To fix the Supreme Commander crashes I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics driver, sound driver, Ethernet driver, Supreme Commander and FAF Client

The last two seemed to help a bit but it steadily went back to more and more crashes. I mostly just did replays to avoid disrupting other peoples' games. I disabled surround sound and sound enhancement long ago so it was not that.

In the end I fixed it by :-

      Uninstall Supreme Commander
Manually delete folder C:\Users\win-account-name\Documents\My Games\Gas Powered Games
      Reinstall Supreme Commander

When I previously uninstalled Supreme Commander I assumed it removed all the old content but with hindsight I don't think it did. I think a manual deletion of the Gas Powered Games folder was needed to get a clean reinstall.

When uninstalling and reinstalling Supreme Commander and the FAF Client I suggest selecting the options that will uninstall the most things. Don't try to retain settings or preferences. A reliable reinstall is more important than retaining old settings that can be re-entered manually.

After each uninstall check for any left behind contents and manually delete them before the reinstall.

For Supreme Commander check folders :-

      C:\Program Files (x86)\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance

C:\Users\win-account-name\AppData\Local\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance

      C:\Users\win-account-name\Documents\My Games\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance

For FAF Client check folders :-

      C:\Program Files\FAF Client

      C:\ProgramData\FAForever

      C:\Users\win-account-name\AppData\Roaming\Forged Alliance Forever

Note AppData and ProgramData are normally hidden so they need to be made visible to check them.

    • Fading Sound Problem Fixed By Using Restart Instead Of Shut down

I had a sound problem with Supreme Commander that lasted about a week. The problem involved the sound fading during a game. The sound would be okay at the start of each game but would then fade so after about 5-10 mins there would be no sound.

      I tried :-

Deleting and reinstalling my sound driver (this normally fixes the sound problems I've had in the past).

      Uninstalling and reinstalling FAF.

      Uninstalling and reinstalling Supreme Commander.

      None of the above helped.

After some research I tried doing a PC Restart instead of a PC Shut down and this fixed the sound problem.

I have a Windows 10 PC and I was Shutting it down once or twice a day, as I normally do, while I had the sound problem. I was surprised to learn that a default Windows 10 PC does not Shut down and switch on in the way I expected.

I assumed when the PC is switched on after a Shut down it would load the PC RAM with a clean copy of Windows 10 from the hard drive. A default Windows 10 PC does not do this. Instead the working copy of Windows 10 in the RAM is saved to the hard drive during Shut down and when the PC is switched on this saved working copy is put back into RAM from the hard drive.

This means if the working copy of Windows 10 becomes corrupted for some reason then it will never clear if the user only uses Shut down on a default Windows 10 PC.

To clear the corrupted working copy of Windows 10 the user needs to do a Restart or a Shift Shut down.

A user can also change their default settings so that a clean copy of Windows 10 will be loaded into RAM when the PC is switched on.

    • RE: sera t3 subs have become op?

I think more people are taking advantage of the over powered T3 sub hunters now which is ruining more games. We shouldn't all be forced to go Seraphim for navy.

I'm not sure reducing the anti-torp by a third will be enough. At the moment packs of T3 sub hunters are invulnerable to other subs/ships that fire torpedoes. at them so they just crush a none seraphim navy.

    • RE: sera t3 subs have become op?

I think the Seraphim T3 sub hunter has been changed and is now much stronger than it was before and is now over powered.

I think most people don't know this so they don't take advantage of it (so far) which may explain why there aren't more comments about it.

When someone does take advantage of it though it ruins the game for their opponent.

Could the relevant person please reduce the sub hunter's strength to bring it back in line with all the other units.

    • RE: FAF 2023_12_1 Crashes on Launch.

I uninstalled FAF using Windows>Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features
      I manually deleted folder C:/Program Files/FAF Client
      I re-installed FAF from faf_windows-x64_2023_12_1.exe
      FAF then worked fine.
      Thank you for your help.

I re-downloaded faf_windows-x64_2023_12_1.exe from the FAF website and re-installed it but I get the same error message when I try to launch FAF. The re-install seemed to go okay. I have windows 10 on my PC.

I just installed the latest version of FAF (2023_12_1). In general new versions of FAF have worked fine for me over the years however I now get the following error message when I run FAF on my PC.

    • RE: Bugs In The Most Recent Version of Supreme Commander (I believe this is 3759)
      1. and 3) seem to have been fixed but not 2).

Under water wreckage is much harder to see than it used to be. This makes the game worse not better. Players should be able to get the reward of reclaiming wreckage. While a player is trying to scout, fight enemy units, maintain/develop their base, etc the last thing they need is difficulty seeing the wreckage they are trying to reclaim.

Turning 'reclaim labels' on can help to see wreckage however in general this presents a bewildering volume of green numbers onto the screen that undermines visibility of units and is very distracting.

There should be clear easily visible contrast between black wreckage and the blue of the water so players can see where to direct their engineers to reclaim.

I think it would help a lot if this was fixed.
