Importance and amount of shields on firebases, for Aeon vs Cybran

I am 1100 rated 2v2 and my (newcomer-ish) 2v2 friend now 700 rated but rapidly ascending, had a discussion about shields and firebases.

He, Cybran, said he often didn't bother with shields because they took so long to build and had barely more hitpoints than T2 arty. He would rather build his artillery farther apart. Me, Aeon, thought he was entirely wrong until we discovered he got a 4000 shield for 700 buildtime, and I got a 11000 hp shield for 950 buildtime.

Ultimately our conclusion was that next time he builds a firebase I give him an Aeon T2 engineer.

Still, I am curious now. What is the best amount of shields for Cybran and Aeon firebases and does the importance of shields for firebases vary per faction?

Why would you build a firebase anyway? Those are super expensive and extremely ineficient

@rezy-noob decrease in travel time or stealth kills come to mind-holding a choke point would also be a big one

in current meta rushing t3 land would be faster and better than making 4 t2 pds,1 sheild,several t1s and a t2 arties
