Something Needs to Be Done About the TMM Queue
-
If you're a 1700+ rated player and you see 20 people in the TMM queue, you still often can't get a match, even though there are clearly enough players to create two balanced teams.
However, if you queue with a lower-rated player (around 1000 rating), the system finds a game almost instantly, and the teams are usually well balanced.
Why can't the matchmaking system create that kind of lobby from the start instead of making high-rated players wait indefinitely?

As far as I know, the matching system in TMM works the same way as in 1x1. If you are searching for a solo, then you can only find players with a rating of +-400 from yours. If you disable this system, even 2k+ players will be able to find games quickly, but almost always in a team with 200-300-500 rated players. In the opinion of the matchmaking team, no one will like this. I would also like this option to be disabled, especially for 2x2 and 4x4, where it is even more difficult to find a game, and the rating of most players is not calibrated.

Even in the 1.5k range it's all already hard to find games in off-peak hours and I just have a bunch of low rated players to queue with because it's easier to find a quick game. I personally have never cared about big differences in rating in my TMM games, but I know some people do, in both directions that is.

I am around 2.3k+ in all tmm modes and I can go 8+ hours of queueing without finding any games whenever I try so it is impossible for me to play tmm even though I really enjoyed 2v2 / 3v3 / 4v4 when they came out. I know there are others in a similar situation and we would all probably play FAF more often if there was some sort of solution implemented into the queue.
One solution would be some soft reset of ranks at the end of each season so that players of a similar level could all match each other again. Everyone above 2k could get reset to 2k rating at the end of a season or each tmm rank could have a reset point (bronze: 500, silver: 900, gold: 1300 etc.), this also lets the league system to feel a bit more active since right now it just feels a bit bland with absolutely no changes between seasons. I know rating decay was discussed a long time ago for global (I think?) but it would also be a solution to the current tmm problem although not as effective since players would need to wait a long time to lose rating.
Both of these could probably be implemented in some way and I don't see it being harmful as tmm is supposed to be competitive unlike global where if you wanted to derank you just need to host a 1v1 and ratings in general are very random anyway.

Unfortunately, most of the suggestions we receive require changes on the server side, and FAF currently doesn't have a dedicated server maintainer. I.e, I wanted to change the order in which queue times are displayed, but even that requires server side changes. Realistically, there's not much we can do until someone is available to work with the server.
One solution would be some soft reset of ranks at the end of each season so that players of a similar level could all match each other again.
We had a soft reset in the past, I think it was done for the 2v2 queue. And there were 10x more complaints after the soft reset happened, so probably not going to happen any time soon again.

I would love to know the win/loss stats on games where there's a match up between a team with two lower rated players and one player 300 pointrs stronger than everyone on the opposition.
My suspicion is that the stronger player pwns all.... Though that might just be at around my own level where that happens.
