Tip for the noobs

... Of which I am one...

Try playing more zoomed out. The more time you spend at max zoom the more time you spend watching for flanks and planning your own. You pretty much only need to zoom in to build structures or micro your units - everything else should be zoomed out. If you find yourself still not spending much time zoomed out, then you need to start making allowances because intel is critical in this game. -> "do I care how precisely these buildings are placed / is it alright if these units don't make it" this is an attention game after all...

There is a minimap, you can make it as big as you want. Building placement gets more important the closer you get to higher tiers.

Also you can use dual screen.

This. It takes some getting used to, but you can literally have a full map open on your second monitor.

I'm a big fan of the mod that makes the minimap disappear when you zoom out.

Nah. Building placement only "matters" at higher ratings because higher rated players already do everything else well and have apm to spare

Being zoomed out also matters more with higher rating
