The current pre-release of the client ("pioneer" in the version) is only compatible to itself. So you can only play with other testers. Please be aware!
before setting up a VPN or DNS, try to configure the connection by disabling IPv6. leave Ipv4.
this is an ancient problem, at one time everyone solved it and safely forgot.
