The current pre-release of the client ("pioneer" in the version) is only compatible to itself. So you can only play with other testers. Please be aware!
It's not exactly a Steam code. You don't enter it in the same place as you would put a "Steam code"
Under the "Games" tab at the top you select "Activate a Product on Steam..."
