The current pre-release of the client ("pioneer" in the version) is only compatible to itself. So you can only play with other testers. Please be aware!
Try a single player game, do you have issues there? If you do, try the vanilla steam version.
If you don't have issues, it is most likely network related or some mod that is causing issues.
