The current pre-release of the client ("pioneer" in the version) is only compatible to itself. So you can only play with other testers. Please be aware!
There are several maps and mods that do what you're thinking of: the gamemode is called 'Survival'.
Check out the map RainMakers Survival, or perhaps Battle of Thermopylae Survival.
