The current pre-release of the client ("pioneer" in the version) is only compatible to itself. So you can only play with other testers. Please be aware!
This can be solved by clearing cookies for the site, re-logging in, and trying to connect the steam account. Simply reloading, or even logging out and back in is not sufficient to fix the problem.
