The current pre-release of the client ("pioneer" in the version) is only compatible to itself. So you can only play with other testers. Please be aware!
The fix is only about the decoding about Game.prefs file. Without any log and any error description, I assume your Linux issue is unfortunately not related to that decode-issue.
