Using a second monitor with a laptop

I've read about the fake fullscreen and multi-monitor setup on a desktop, but my situation is just different enough that those solutions didn't work. I have a 4k monitor with my laptop, and that 4k is set as my primary display, extending the display across to the laptop (second screen). Enabling the second monitor option in the game menu crashes the game completely. Ideally, I'd like to have the game running on my 4k and use the laptop screen for the mini-map. Is this feasible?
